Showcasing the human aspect of innovation and industry

Racing a solar car to the desert in Morocco
Client: Solar Team Twente

Solar Team Twente is a student’s team from The Netherlands that built their own high-tech solar car. While the race normally takes place on a straight and flat parcours in Australia, due to COVID the race was moved to a very challenging route in Morocco.

The solar car endured massive mountains, winding roads, chaotic villages right up to the Saharan desert. Over the course of 5 days it covered over 2500 kilometers, only using 1 fully charged battery and the power of the sun.

My assignment was to embed with the team and capture the race as they experienced it.

Innovative thinkers of the Netherlands
Client: 4TU University federation

For the annual Dutch Design Week exposition in Eindhoven, 4TU tasked me with shooting a large series of fresh portraits. The subjects for these portraits were all innovative thinkers based in the Netherlands and affiliated to one of the country’s major technical universities. They included world-renowned architect David Gianotten, professor Maarten Steinbuch and several PhD candidates and young master students working on exciting projects.

For this project, it was important for the innovative thinkers to show their personality. This is the way I like to work: shooting genuine portraits that bring out the best but also most genuine part of people.

The final images were used on banners displayed in the exposition hall of the four universities in the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven.

Enabling people with spinal cord injury to move again
Client: ONWD

ONWD is an innovative medical company based in Switzerland and Eindhoven. It’s main purpose is to help people with a spinal cord injury to regain their mobility. They do so through a small implant system that stimulates the cord that restores movement and other functions.

My assignment for ONWD was to capture intimate and authentic portraits of their staff that showcased their personality. In addition I shot a large number of behind the scenes images that document the atmosphere in the workplace.

The passionate side of innovation

After spending years working for the biggest sports teams in Europe, I’ve become experienced in capturing genuine moments and the personalities of people with a passion and a singular focus.

This approach is perfectly suited to documenting the human aspect of innovative technological companies. It’s the people that make a company. Showing a company’s culture and team can help attract new potential employees, and show the general public a more human and passionate side of innovation.

The work I aim to make is different from normal corporate photography. My portraits capture the personality of specific employees, and my behind the scenes work shows authentic moments. These can be posed are unstaged, but always look real, showing humans instead of models.
